NATIVITY PLAY
Members of Wokingham C.E.M.S., Young Wives, group and helpers presented a
Nativity play at All Saints’ Church, Wokingham, on Wednesday and Thursday.
Attractive costumes made the production colourful. Equipment was loaned by the
Wokingham Players and a collection was taken from the large audience in aid of the
Curate’s House fund.

ROYAL ARTILLERY ASSOCIATION
At the request of the new chairman (Mr. A.D. Tanner), Brigadier E.J. Douche
presided over the annual dinner of the Wokingham branch of the Royal Artillery
Association, held at the Bush Hotel, Wokingham, on Saturday. The guest of honour
was Lord Malise Graham, district chairman of the Association.
COINCIDENCE
Ten Years ago, patrons of the Lord Raglan public house, Wokingham answered an
appeal by one of their members, Sgt., Ken Race, who was serving with the Royal
Artillery in Italy, for a dartboard. Last Saturday the brass inscription plate was handed
over to Mr. J. Mead, landlord of the Lord Raglan, who intends to nail it up in the
public bar. It had been found by another local player in Tunisia, North Africa.
HISTORIC INTEREST
The Minister of Town and Country Planning has compiled a list of buildings of
special architectural or historic interest in Wokingham and they had been scheduled
under the Town and Country Planning Act, 1947. Among the places scheduled are All
Saints’ Church, St. Paul’s Church, Lucas Hospital, The Roebuck Inn, The
Wokingham Club, Ye Olde Rose Inne, The Bush Hotel, The Beeches Manor Hotel,
and properties in Broad Street, Denmark Street, Market Place, Peach Street, Reading
Road, Rose Street, Shute End, Wiltshire Road and Dowles Green.

THE KING IS DEAD
His Majesty King George VI passed away at Sandringham House in the early hours

of Wednesday morning (7.30 a.m.), only 56 years of age and in the 16 year of his
reign. Shocked and profoundly grieved by the sudden news, the Nation and Empire
are in deepest mourning. The Royal County of Berkshire, with the County Borough of
Reading, shares the general sense of poignant sorrow which has been aroused by the
death of a beloved Monarch.
MAYOR’S LOYAL TELEGRAM
The following telegram was addressed to Queen Elizabeth, and sent to Sandringham
at noon on Wednesday:-
The people of the Borough of Wokingham are deeply grieved at the death of His
Majesty the King, and with humble duty express their heartfelt sympathy for you and
the Royal Family. –W.J. Willey, Mayor of Wokingham.
