                                                   SCOUTS IN CAMP

                      A party of Scouts from the 5  Wokingham troop spent Whitsun week-end in camp
                   at Wheatlands Manor, Finchampstead, led by S.M.G. Moles.

                                                 ARTILLERY DANCE
                      The  local  branch  of  the  Royal  Artillery  Association  held  a  dance  at  Wokingham
                   Drill Hall, on Saturday, music being by Stan Ayres and his band. Mr. E. Cropper was
                   M.C.

                                             FIRE AT FIREMAN’S HOME
                      Fireman  were  called  out  on  Friday  night  last  week  to  “Ye  Olde  Tuck  Shoppe,”
                   Market Place, Wokingham, the home of Mr. H. Hawkins, a Wokingham fireman. His
                   chimney was on fire.


                                            OFFERTORY BOXES ROBBED
                      On Friday evening last week, offertory boxes at St. Paul’s and All Saints’ Churches,
                   Wokingham,  were  broken  open  and  the  contents  taken.  Because  of  previous
                   happenings of a similar nature at both churches the boxes are emptied regularly and it
                   is believed that only a few shillings were taken.

                                               PENSIONERS’ MEETING
                      Members of No. 1 branch, Wokingham Old Age Pensioners’ Association, attended
                   their  fortnightly  meeting  in  Wokingham  Legion  Hall  on  Wednesday.  Community
                   singing and social was followed by tea.

                                          MISSIONARY GARDEN MEETING
                      St. Paul’s Missionary Association, Wokingham, held a garden meeting and sale in
                   the grounds of Appin Lodge, Murdoch Road, Wokingham, the home of Mr. and Mrs.
                   Inman, on Wednesday. The Speaker was the Rev. George Warren, of the Melanesian
                   Mission.

                                                    CONVENT FETE
                      About £150 was raised at a fete on Saturday organised by the Wokingham Convent
                   of Presentation in aid of school funds. Fine weather ensured a good attendance, and
                   stalls and competitions carried on briskly throughout the afternoon. The main feature
                   of  the  entertainment  was  a  demonstration  of  dances  from  Europe  and  Russia,
                   including American square dances.

                                                MODERN MUSIC CLUB
                      The Wokingham Modern Music Club held their final musical evening of the season
                   on Tuesday at the Wheatsheaf, Wokingham. Started only eight weeks ago the club has
                   become well established in Wokingham, and it is hoped to re-commence in September
                   with guest singers and instrumentalists from London. On Tuesday next members of
                   the club are going to Wimbledon to hear their resident band—the Top Five—compete
                   in the Melody Maker Dance Band Championships.
