FIRE AT WEST COURT
On Monday morning about 2.25 am alarm was given at the Volunteer Fire Brigade
station that a fire had broken out at West Court, Finchampstead, the residence of the
Rev. Alan Buchanan. On the arrival of the Brigade, it was found that the library, also
used as a smoking room, was in flames, but by the efforts of the brigade the fire was
soon got out. Unfortunately a valuable panelled oak mantel piece, worth about £250
(£750??) was destroyed, the wall panelling, floor, and carpet, partly burned, and the
fixtures seriously injured by the heat and smoke. The furniture was saved, the police
and the men servants removing some of it before the arrival of the fire brigade.
The building, which is the property of the Rev. E. St. John, Rector of
Finchampstead, is insured in the Atlas Fire Office and the furniture in the Sun Office.
The brigade reached home at half past six.
THE CORPORATION PICTURES
Councillor Powell stated that the pictures sent to Messrs. Ryman & Co. Oxford for
cleaning and renovation had been returned.
