Town Band (24 performers), conducted by Mr. W. Bashford; 2, Crowthorne Band (16
                   performers),  conducted  by  Mr.  T.  Taylor;  3,  Staines  Town  Band  (18  performers),
                   conducted by Mr. J. Fane; 4, Reading Temperance Band (24 performers), conducted
                   by Mr. W. Farr. This test piece was “The Champion,” overture by Hartmann.
                      The judge was Mr. Warwick Williams, conductor of the London Military Band. The

                   proceedings commenced in the Market-place with a Quickstep Contest. The 1  prize
                                                                           nd
                   was awarded to the Reading Temperance Band, and the 2  to Crowthorne Band. For
                                           st
                   the Grand Contest, the 1  prize of £8 10s. in money and a cornet, specially made for
                   the contest, was awarded to the Reading Temperance Band. The second prize of £2
                   10s.  in  money  and  a  trombone  fell  to  the  Staines  Town  Band.  Crowthorne  Band
                   secured the third prize of £5 5s. The prizes were distributed on the lawn at Matthew’s
                   Green  by  Lady  Russell.  Votes  of  thanks  were  proposed  by  the  Mayor  (Mr.  T.W.
                   Heelas), to Lady Russell and to Mrs. Nicholson.
                      Dancing  was  indulged  in  after  the  contest.  Mrs.  Nicholson  entertained  a  large
                   number of friends on the lawn.

                      Mr. John Morres, 2  son of Mr. Charles Morres, and grandson of the late Rector of
                   Wokingham, has just won his appointment in the Indian Civil Engineering Service,
                                       th
                   having  come  out  4   in  the  final  examination  at  the  Royal  Engineering  College,
                   Cooper’s Hill.
                                                VOLUNTEER PARADE
                      The  annual  Church  Parade  of  the  Wokingham  Company,  Berks  Volunteers,  took
                   place  on  Sunday.  Headed  by  the  All  Saints’  parish  band,  and  accompanied  by  the

                   Mayor (Mr. T. Heelas), the Corporation, and the 1  Wokingham Boys’ Brigade, the
                   Volunteers marched to the Parish Church, where an excellent sermon was preached by
                   the Rector of Wokingham. Capt. Walter was in command of the Company.

                                            WOKINGHAM CYCLING CLUB
                      The members and friends of the Wokingham Cycling Club had a social tea at the
                   “George  and  Dragon”,  Wargrave,  on  Wednesday.  Lady  friends  and  non-riding
                   members drove down in breaks, ad the contingent on wheels numbered 18. Under the
                   able management of the Secretary, Mr. E.C. Ducrocq, and the Captain, Mr. J. Seward,
                   everything went off well.

                                            WOKINGHAM CYCLING CLUB
                      The annual illuminated ride took place on Wednesday evening, and proved as usual,
                   a  great  attraction.  Starting  from  the  Drill  Hall,  and  headed  by  a  band,  the  cyclists
                   paraded the principal streets of the town. At 8 p.m., a promenade concert took place in
                   the Drill Hall, under the management of Mr. C.H. Martin. There was a large audience.
                   The  following  took  part  in  the  programme:--Mr.  Bellinger  (Whistling  solo);  Mr.
                   Bruce Jones (comic song); Mr. Clark (piccolo solo); Mr. Kettley (comic songs), and
                   Mr. Claude Martin (song).

                                                   TOWN LIGHTING
                      The lighting of the town will after this week be undertaken by the Corporation, Mr.
                   Hall’s tender having expired. A petition has been numerously signed by the ratepayers
