open to the subscribers and the Fire Brigade. (cheers)-. The Rev. J.T. Brown, on
behalf of Mrs. Brown and himself expressed the pleasure it afforded him to welcome
the company present.
The Mayor of Wokingham (Ald. D. N. Heron), proposed a vote of thanks to the
members of the brigade, and Mr. E. Ifould, the captain, replied.
Mr. H. E. Hall (hon.sec. of the brigade) thanked Mrs. Murdoch for her attendance
and the naming of the new steam, engine. Three cheers were given for the Rev. J. T.
and Mrs. Brown, for the Wokingham Fire Brigade, and a similar compliment was paid
to Mrs. Murdoch. The Rev. J.T. Brown kindly provided refreshments in the house for
subscribers and friends. The Wokingham Town Band (under Mr. W.J. Allen) played
selections on the lawn during the evening, and also headed the procession of engines
which paraded the town during the afternoon.
The new steam engine is capable of delivering 300 gallons per minute, and is fitted
with all the latest improvements. It has a very smart appearance, and on the
woodwork is painted the name of the brigade.
The Maiden Erlegh Brigade (under Mr. Stallworthy) and the Frimley, Camberley,
and York Town Brigade (under the command of Mr. J. Moss), were present during the
trials of the new engine.
Engineer Caiger will act as engineer of the new engine, and Fireman Seward and
Hughes as deputy-engineers. The engineer sent from Messrs. Merryweather and Sons,
the makers, remained this week in order to give practical instruction.

AMERICAN FAIR
A sale of goods and work, styled an “American Fair,” took place at Highfield,
Milton-road, the residence of Commissioner Gregorie, on Wednesday afternoon. The
grounds were crowded, and owing to the cheapness of the goods offered for sale, and
the business tact of the ladies offering them, nearly everything was disposed of, the
crowds being greatest perhaps round the clothing and tea stalls. The proceeds of the
sale will be devoted towards defraying the debt on the Palmer Schools. Among those
present during the evening were the Mayor of Wokingham (Ald. Heron), Mrs. Heron
and Mrs. Lawrence, Ald Wescott, the Revs. E. Sturges, J.T. Brown and H. Lusty, Mrs.
De Vitrê, and Miss Pitman, the Misses Eden, Mrs. Nicholson, and Miss Smith,
Captain Thompson, Mrs. And Miss Ellison, Miss J. Roberts, Mrs. H.T. Roberts, Miss
Gower, Miss Errington, Cllr. Drake, &c.

C. Gregorie, Miss Hill, Mrs. Gregorie, Mrs. Pearman, Misses Pearman, Miss L.

under Mr. Thorne’s conductorship. The proceeds amounted to over £47, and 1,100
people paid for admission.
