DANCING: SERGT. AND MRS. TANNER IN FINAL
A gala dance was held on Monday in the Drill Hall. Mr. E. Pearce, with his Jolly
Quintette Dance Orchestra, was in attendance. In the eliminating contest for the
Southern Counties’ Waltzing Championship Cup, Sergt.-Instructor T.T. Tanner and
Mrs. Tanner came out on top of the 11 couples competing, and therefore qualified for
the final, to be held in Reading. The judges were Mr. and Mrs. H. Drewett and Mr.
Len Charmaine, who also acted as M.C.
HARVEST FESTIVAL
Harvest festival for the two churches were held on Wednesday. At St. Paul’s
teachers and scholars of the day schools attended the 11.30 a.m. service, conducted by
the rector, Rev. H.M. Walter, at which the Rev. A.P. Carr, Vicar of St. Sebastian’s,
gave the address. The united service for both churches were held in the evening at All
Saints’. The anthem was “Thou visited the earth” (Green), and the special preacher
was the Rev. G.S. Long, Rector of Aldington, Kent.
CATHOLIC SALE OF WORK
In aid of the funds of the Catholic Church of Corpus Christi, the Terrace, a sale of
work was successfully held at the Presbytery, Station Road, on Wednesday last week.
Stalls were arranged around the garden and were managed as follows:-Fancy stall:
Mrs. and the Misses Ashton. Second-hand stall: the Misses Woodward. Sixpenny
stall: Miss Tornito Bernito. Fruit and vegetables: Misses Ellis and Walpole and Mr.
O’Connor. Tea on the lawn was served by a number of ladies.
MOTORING ACCIDENT
About 6.40 p.m. on Sunday, a collision between a motor-car and a motor-cycle
occurred at Handpost Corner, Finchampstead Road. The motor-cycle owned and
driven by Mr. Charles Sully, of Maidenhead, also carried a pillion passenger, Pte.
Mallett, of the 2nd. Batt. Royal Tank Corps, stationed at Farnborough. At the turning
into Finchampstead Road, an open touring car driven by Mr. Percy Norris, of
Clapham, London, collided from the rear with the cycle as the driver, Mr. Sully, was
slowing down to take the turning. Both the riders of the cycle sustained injuries-cuts,
bruises and shock, and damaged clothing.
SPOON SHOOT REVIVED

Before the war, “D” Company of the 4 Royal Berks held spoon shoots regularly
during the summer, and on Sunday this custom was revived. Five rounds with a
sighter were fired at 200, 500 and 600 yards.. For the Class A (Marksmen) Spoon,
Lce.-Cpl. Hurdwell was first, Major Hughes second, and Sgt. Marriner third. In the
Class B Spoon, Lce.-Cpl. Woodley and Pte. Knight shot off after a tie, resulting in a
win for Pte. Knight. The Recruits’ Spoon was won by Pte. Bickmore. During the
morning the ties for the Company Cup, and the Lewis Gun Cup were shot off, the
Company Cup being won by Lce.-Cpl. Kew with C.Q.M.S. Longhurst second, and
Cpl. Cleeton third. The Lewis Gun cup was won by Pte Bole, with Lce.-Cpl. Woodley
second.
