Weekend Camp
There was a good muster of 60 for the first week-end camp at the usual camping
ground in Wiltshire Road (by kind permission of Mr. E.C. Hughes), on Saturday and
Sunday. The company was under its company commander (Lieut. Spencer G. Ford,
D.F.C., Second Lieut. C. W. Booth, Second Lieut. C.R. Watson, C.S.M. Brant and
C.Q.M.S. Longhurst. A large number of those present attended the usual Saturday
night dance at the Drill Hall.
On Sunday the company devoted a considerable amount of time to elementary
machine-gun training. Colonel Field (C.O.) and Captain Johnson (adjutant) visited the
camp on Sunday morning and expressed themselves very pleased at the progress
made in so short a time. The company has only recently become a machine-gun
company, under the new establishment, and a lot of hard work has been put in by
officers, N.C.O.s and men during this winter and spring, in order to become proficient
in the handling of this new arm.
nd
The 2 Battalion now at Aldershot, have given every assistance in their power, and
both officers and N.C.O.s have greatly profited by recent courses of instruction there.
On Sunday night an enjoyable concert was held at the Drill Hall, run by the
Wokingham Military Band, under the direction of Mr. E.J. Newman, late bandmaster
R.A., Woolwich. This band is closely connected with the company. Programme:- All
Saints’ Glee Party; Cpl. Carter and C.S.M. Brant, songs; Mr. H. Langley, clarinet
solo; Miss M. Webb, accompanist.
There are six vacancies for six more recruits before camp, which is being held at
