The Mayor’s Own 1 Wokingham Rover Scouts, under R.M. Cyril Wilson, did
excellent service. Little Joan and Pat Nicholson with their sweet trays did a good
trade, as did little Miss Noyes with the cake-weight guessing competition.
A capital concert programme, arranged by Mr. A.H. Lusty, A.R.C.O., organist of St.
Paul’s, was given on the lawn in the evening. Miss D.M. Griffin played a couple of
pianoforte solos in excellent style. Mrs. Horne (who as Miss Ricketts has frequently
delighted St. Paul’s congregation with her sweet singing) sang “Mountain Lovers”
and “Bird of love divine.”
A male quartet party, Messrs. R. Hosler, J. Orpin, F. Vass and J. Wright, gave
several pleasing part songs. “Dr. Foster,” “The Joke,” “The Sailor’s Song,” etc., in
good style. Mr. R.E. Burkett was as usual a favourite, as was Mr. F.W. Manning in his
bass solos. The laughable sketch, “Jackets,” was ably acted by the Misses. B. Monger,
G. Taylor, T. Rickards and G. Bolton. Miss Barbara Fellows contributed some very
pretty solo dances.
The proceedings concluded with a dance in the Drill Hall. Music was supplied by
Mr. Ayers’ Dance Band, and Mr. Eric Langley was M.C. Refreshments were supplied
by the ladies of the fete refreshment stall. Prizes for dancing were won by Miss
Newberry and Mr. Burcham, Miss Howard and Mr. Cook.
Upwards of 1,000 visitors patronised the event. Mr. A.E. Priest, hon. secretary of St.
Paul’s Parochial Church Council and of the fete committee and his hardworking
helpers, deserve every congratulation upon their very successful efforts.
