                                                “AMERICAN SUPPER.”
                      To relieve the burden on those who normally deal with the catering, the meeting of
                   the borough branch of the Young Conservatives’ Association held on Friday last week
                   at  Dundaff  House,  Rectory  Road,  Wokingham  was  regarded  as  an  “American
                   Supper”—for which all members took their own refreshments.

                      Mr.  George  Owen  gave  his  twentieth  lecture  in  the  series  “Aspects  of  European
                   Civilisation in the XVIIth Century” to members of the W.E.A. on Thursday last week.
                   In  this  Mr.  Owen  dealt  with  the  significance  of  the  scientific  revolution  and  its
                   consequences on human thought.

                                      HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION SOCIAL
                      Over  60  members  of  the  Wokingham  Horticultural  Association  spent  a  pleasant
                   time at their annual social in the Baptist Schoolroom, Milton Road, Wokingham on
                   Saturday evening. All gardening cares and worries were forgotten as members took
                   part in an entertaining programme of games and competitions organised by Mr. D.
                   Cahill, who acted as M.C.

                                              MR. T.G. BOSTON’S VISIT
                      Mr.  Terry  Boston,  the  Labour  Party’s  prospective  Parliamentary  candidate  for
                   Wokingham  called  in  at  the  social  organised  by  the  Borough  Labour  Party  in  the
                   Church  House,  Wokingham,  on  Saturday  to  meet  his  constituents  in  an  informal
                   manner. Over 100 people were present,  and Mr.  F.G.  Furber, the Party  agent, was
                   M.C. Music was provided by Ken-Car.

                                        WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYERS
                      In  Wokingham,  as  in  towns  and  cities  throughout  the  world,  a  special  service  in
                   connection with the “Women’s World Day of Prayer” was held on Friday last week.
                   Lady members of all local churches gathered in the Methodist Church, Rose Street,
                   during  the  afternoon  for  a  service  conducted  by  Mrs.  H.  Ogden.  The  address  was
                   given by Mrs. P. Brown, and others taking part were Mrs. Inman, Mrs. Henderson,
                   Mrs. Brooker, Major Browning and Mrs. Ray Smith.

                                                 “CANTLEY” ESTATE
                     The Cinematograph Trade Benevolent Fund confirmed this week that negotiations
                   are in progress for the sale of their recently acquired “Cantley” estate to the Marquess
                   of Ormonde, recently of “Gennings,” Hunton,  Maidstone, Kent.  The  family  seat  is
                   Kilkenny Castle. The Marchioness is the daughter of the late Charles Carlos Clarke,
                   of Sunninghill. It is understood that the new owners are unlikely to take up residence
                   until the end of the year.

                                                   RENT TRIBUNAL
                      Sitting at Wokingham on Monday, the Reading Rent Tribunal heard an application
                   by Mr. F.J. Barnett for a reasonable rent to be fixed for Rookswood Annexe, South
                   Drive, Wokingham, leased by him from Miss E.M. Carter and Miss V.M. Lindow.
                   The premises, a converted garage, consisting of two rooms and a kitchen, were rented
