him on the mound, and Dale Russell took over behind the plate. Six of the visitors’
runs came in the fifth innings. But Dale Russell hit a three-run homer to make matters
more even, ad in a ninth innings rally B. Higgins also made the round trip.

WASTE PAPER
The Borough Surveyor’s report shows that seven tons of waste paper was sold by
the borough since his last report.
TENANTS’ SOCIAL
Members of the Waterloo Road Tenants’ Association enjoyed themselves at a social

NEW WIDE SCREEN
The new wide screen at the Ritz Cinema, Wokingham, was officially “opened” for
the first time on Monday at a short ceremony conducted with the assistance of two

members of the 1 Wokingham (Mayor’s Own) Scout Group. Ten-years-old Roy
Whitworth was handed a shilling for “Bob-a-Job” week funds by the manager, Mr. H.
Clark, for carrying on to the stage a small table and electric switch, and Christopher
Hussey a 15 years-old scout, made the opening speech and was also handed a
donation to scout funds by the manager.

MACE LEAVES TOWN
Wokingham’s silver mace made one of its rare appearances outside the borough on
Wednesday when taken to Abingdon for a ceremony at which the freedom of the
borough was conferred on the Royal Berkshire Regiment. The borough was
represented by the Mayor, Cllr. W.J. Willey, the Town Clerk, Mr. L. Goddard
Smalley, and the Sergeant-at-Arms, Mr. C.A. Nibbs, all of whom were wearing their
official regalia.
EXCHANGE VISIT
The Mayor and Mayoress of Wokingham, Cllr. And Mrs. W.J. Willey, were at
Wokingham station early on Thursday morning to wish those taking part in the
exchange educational visit between children of St. Crispin’s School and a school at
Braunlage, Germany, a good voyage home. The Mayor handed to them a photograph
taken at the recent Mayor’s Sunday parade and a letter for the Burgermeister of
Braunlage. The previous evening the Germans were entertained at a farewell party at
St. Crispin’s School.
AT WESTMINSTER ABBEY
Representing the Borough of Wokingham at a service held in Westminster Abbey
on Monday to mark the tenth anniversary of the signing of the United Nations
Charter, and attended by H.M. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, was the Mayor,
Cllr. W.J. Willey. After the service, civic heads from boroughs and rural districts all
over the country all were entertained by the chairman of the L.C.C., Mr. Norman
Pritchard, at the county Hall, Westminster, where the Rt. Hon. Mr. Anthony Nutting
spoke on the significance of the anniversary.
