MEMORIALS HOMES FETE
Due to the generosity of the family of the late Alderman Philip Sale—a mayor and
freeman of the borough of Wokingham—the town council were able to build a home
for elderly people on a plot of land near the centre of the town, said the Mayor, Cllr.
W.J. Willey, in opening a garden fete in the orchard at the rear of the Alderman Sale
Memorial Homes on Saturday afternoon.
The fete, he explained, was to raise money to provide a television set for the
common room in the homes. Among those present were the Misses Constance and
Dorothy Sale, daughters of the alderman to whose memory the houses were erected,
the Hon. Mrs. Remnant, wife of the Member of Parliament for the Division and
several members of the council. After the official opening the Mayoress was
presented with a bouquet by Mrs. E.M. Windebank, who on that day had been a
resident of the homes for exactly two years. In addition to the usual stalls and
competitions there was a dancing display, and pony rides.
