REFRESHING
More people visited the Martin’s Swimming Pool over the week-end than at any
time since August Bank Holiday, 1953. During Saturday and Sunday 549 people paid
to enter the grounds, and there were 1,432 swimmers.
YOUTH CLUB OUTING
Members of the All Saints’ Youth Club enjoyed an evening outing to Wargrave on
Friday last week—including the boy who fell into the river while testing its
temperature before an intentional swim.
JUNIOR SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB
The club outing to Ryde on Sunday was a great success. The programme included a
cricket match on the sands, won by Stan Reading’s team over that captained by Jim
Edgington, the scores being 88 to 44.
ROVERS IN SWITZERLAND
For the second year running members of the 5th Wokingham Rover Crew are
setting off today (Saturday) for a fortnight’s camping in Switzerland. They are
travelling in the same 15cwt. Truck that they used last year, when they were stranded
in Paris with a broken shaft. Leader of the party will be Phil Woods, and rover Mate
Harold Gates will be looking after the finances.
SCOUT GROUPS TO AMALGAMATE

The 1at (Mayor’s Own) and the 5 Wokingham Scout groups are to amalgamate.

They will be known as the 3rd Wokingham group. Mr. S.G. Butcher, G.S.M. of the 1
Wokingham group, will hold the same office with the new group. The newly-adopted
scarves are to be emerald green, and will have the old emblem of Wokingham—an
acorn and two oak leaves.
CHILDREN BEAT PARENTS
Children of St. Paul’s School, Wokingham, beat a parents’ team at cricket on
Wednesday. The parents were handicapped by having to use a bat half the usual
width, and had to run at least twice during each over. The parents declared at 87 for 6,
but the boys, with several wickets in hand, scored 91 runs before stumps were drawn.
Best hit of the match was by the head master, Mr. S.W. Meachen, who lofted a ball on
to the roof of the laundry adjacent to the school playing field.
SCHOOL OUTINGS
Four coach-loads of children from St. Paul’s School, Wokingham, and their parents,
set off early yesterday (Friday) for their annual outing. They were bound for
Bournemouth, and intended to call at Salisbury on the way. They planned to visit
Winchester on the return journey.
-- Children from Palmer and Wescott Road Schools joined forces for their annual
outings, and they went by train to London. Their programme included a river trip, a
visit to the Tower, and a coach tour of London.
CHAMBER OF TRADE
Only three members—apart from the secretary, Mr. A.D. Tanner—arrived at the
Wokingham Town Hall on Monday for the meeting of the executive council of the
Wokingham and District Chamber of Trade. As this was only half the required
