SUCCESSFUL BALL AT WOKINGHAM
In Aid of the Mayor’s Distress Fund
A ball in aid of the Mayor’s Distress Fund, held in the Drill Hall, Wokingham, on
Monday, was sold out. Mr. Alan Perkins was the very able hon. secretary, and the
organisation was exceptionally well carried out. The dancing area was crowded.
The hall, with decorations kindly left from the recent Territorial Ball, was well
suited. Music was supplied by Harry Hook’s Piccadilly Dance Band, from Reading,
while N. Blake’s band, “The Bohemians,” acted as relief for the supper dances. Mr.
Gordon Reeves was M.C., and Mr. F. Stanley Perkins was announcer. The
proceedings went with a capital swing and Mr. Hook’s band presented excellent
tempo and tone. The Mayor (Dr. H.F. Curl) and the Mayoress (Miss Curl) were
present, and the assembly was most representative. The Mayor’s Fund received a
substantial increment. Councillor Miss Wescott organised the refreshments, her
committee comprising: Mrs. R. Rose, Mrs. E.S. Whaley, Mrs. Winlove, Mrs. A.H.
Perkins and Miss Finch. Mrs George Townsend loaned decorations, etc. Miss I.F.
Daldorph organised “sweeps” and prizes; Mr. G. Gough gave appreciated assistance
with the decorating, and Mr. C. Scragg loaned decorative plants.
There were numerous donors of prizes. The Yorktown (Camberley) Gas and
Electricity Company heated the refreshment room while many friends loaned goods or
gave their services. Prizes were given by Mr. F. Moore, Messrs. Colebrook and Co.,
Mr. W.E. Exton, Mr. Goldsack (the Rose Hotel), Miss Daldorph,, Councillor G.C.
Wilson, Mr. Morgan (Wokingham Electric Theatre), Mr. A. Andrews, Messrs. Sale
and Son (Wokingham), Ltd. and Mrs. C. Lee.
“Belisha Beacons” Introduced
The dances, numerous and varied, included “Belisha Beacons,” a most amusing
item, in which the “pedestrian crossing” had to be cleared by two “policemen” every
time the music ceased. The “Sergeant-Major’s Dance,” in which Sergt. Major J.
Weaver instructed the dancers by megaphone to break up into line, reform and
perform various other evolutions caused much fun. Prize-winners were Mr. J.
Langley, Miss Reeves, Mr. C.H. Patrick, Major-General M. Grant Wilkinson, DR.
Chapman, Mr. Humphreys, Mr. P. Grantham,, Miss Canning and Mr. J. Buckle.
A number of sidelines brought in considerable sums. Miss Daldorph’s raffle realised
£5 10s.
The cloakroom attendants gave 15s. (half their takings) to the fund. Mr. Wilson’s
“tote” made £1 1s.
The mayoress presented the prizes to the winners, amid applause, and Mr. H. Watts
auctioned and re-auctioned a basket of fruit and other gifts, by which means the
Mayor’s Fund was augmented to the extent of £2 9s.
The Mayor expressed his thanks to all who had assisted to make the ball such a
success. Mr. Alan Perkins thanked the Mayoress for presenting the prizes, also Mr. H.
Watts for auctioning the various articles.
A spirit of whole-hearted pleasure prevailed, and it is expected that the total
financial results will well exceed those of any previous ball of this description.
Mr. C.G. Wilson is the hon. treasurer.
