of the aforesaid Town or one of them in the absence of the Alderman to
execute that place faithfully in all things which do belong unto it And Wee
will that the aforesaid Secondary Burgesses appointed by these presents
named by us as is aforesaid before they be admitted to execute the place of
Secondary Burgesses of the aforesaid Town they & everyone of them shall
Head or High take a Corporall Oath before the Alderman of the said Town for the time
Steward being to execute the place uprightly well & faithfully in & through all
things And further Wee will & by these presents for us our heirs &
successors Wee grant
The First High to the aforesaid Alderman & Burgesses of the aforesaid Town & their
Steward successors And Wee ordain that hence forward for ever there be & shall or
may be within the aforesaid Town from time to time for ever an Eminent
Man which shall be & shall be called Head Steward of the Town of
Wokingham in the county of Berks & Wilts And for the better executing of
our Grant in this behalf Wee have assigned named appointed & made & by
these presents for us our heirs & successors Wee do assign name & make
& appoint our well beloved Henry Nevill Knight to be the first & modern
head Steward of the aforesaid Town to continue in the same office during
his natural life And further Wee will by these presents for us & our heirs &
successors wee grant to the said Alderman & Burgesses of the foresaid
Town & their successors that the Alderman & Second Burgesses of the
said Town for the time to be one within ten dayes after the death or
removall of the said Henry Nevill Knight now chief steward of the
aforesaid Town & afterwards from time to time for ever within ten dayes
after the death or removall of any person which shall be Chief Steward of
the aforesaid Town that they shall have power from time to time att their
discretion to nominate & choose another eminent Man into the place &
office of Chief Steward of
the aforesaid Town And further Wee will & by these presents for us our
heirs & successors wee grant unto the aforesaid Alderman & Burgesses of
the aforesaid Town & their successors that they & their successors
henceforth for ever may & shall have within the said Town one honest &
discreet man expert in the Laws of England to be chosen in form hereafter
Recorder or Under mentioned in these presents which may be & shall be called Recorder or
Steward Under Steward of the said Town & that it will may & shall be lawfull for
the said Alderman & Head Burgesses of the aforesaid Town for the time
